Sidmouth 2015

Playing for Early Dance Workshop with Andy Richards and the Jigalots
Learn to play with style and emphasis, so that people have fun dancing an Almain, Branle, Ballo and Tourdion from the 15th and 16th centuries. We welcome players of acoustic instruments that can blend into a band and learn simple tunes by ear in D and G. Music available in advance at the foot of this page http://www.jigalots.co.uk/early-dance. [Saturday 1st August 14:15, St Teresa’s Church Hall] Confident players will be encouraged to be in the band to play for Sunday’s Early Dance Workshop.

Early Dance Workshop with Andy Richards and the Jigalots
Learn to dance an Almain, Ballo, Branle and Tourdion – dances from the 15th and 16th centuries that are jolly interesting and great fun! You don’t need to bring a partner (but you can if you want). No prior knowledge will be assumed, if you can skip in time to music with a sense of humour then this is for you. Confident players from the Playing for Early Dance workshop will be encouraged to be in the band. [Sunday 2nd August 14:15, St Teresa’s Church Hall].

Andy Richards, a dance caller and pipe and tabor player for the Jigalots, is leading the Playing for Early Dance and Early Dance Workshops, which he has run very successfully and with many smiles at Sidmouth Folk Week in the past. Andy has danced and played with the Capriol Society, Rostibolli and the Taborers Society, and has been chief researcher, choreographer and taborer for the Rose Moresk.

The Jigalots are a band whose every member is an extremely experienced dancer and player for dance. Their normal focus is ceilidh/barn dance, but they love the excitement and fun of dances from the 14th to the 21st century. With Andy Richards, they will lead the Playing for Early Dance Workshop, and with confident players from that workshop will play for the Early Dance Workshop. The Jigalots will then be the band for the Quadrille Workshops and Ball, which will be called by the wonderful Martyn Harvey. [Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3rd to 6th August 15:50, Methodist Church Hall].
